Mind you, SNES Aladdin still isn’t much more than an easy-peasy, 7/10 game at best. The SNES version of Aladdin was always going to look the poor man’s version compared to the Genesis game, but its gameplay is easily the better of the two. Unfortunately both gamers (the audience was considerably younger on average back then) and the specialized press were over the moon for those games thanks to the amazing graphics and animation. There was a LOT of fuss around Dave Perry and his work at Virgin/Shiny at the time and the games did look incredible, but collisions, legibility, platforming, level design and difficulty balance of those games have always been questionable. You could easily fall to your death if you got unlucky.Ĭlick to shrink. This is pretty much all that needs to be said. The real annoying part of SNES Aladdin was the bit in the genie stage where the genie creates random platforms over a huge chasm. From what I remember of the MD version of that stage, it was much more frustrating. MD Aladdin will always be the more faithful adaptation, sure, but the better game? Nah, that does not compute.Īlso, people had trouble with the lava chase in SNES Aladdin? I mean, it's not easy, and not especially fun, but it doesn't take that many tries to memorize it. But still, it's a bit inexplicable to me how there's a debate over this. I guess it's a mix of nostalgia - which, let's face it, we're all subject to to some extent -, MD Aladdin's graphics standing the test of time, and the fact that way more people played the MD game than the SNES version back in the day. looking back on it, Aladdin not having a sword is more faithful to the movie and the character.Īs generations went by, hardware got more and more powerful, people tolerated unfair difficulty less and less, and time gave us hindsight, I used to be convinced that SNES Aladdin would be regarded as the better game, and MD Aladdin would be seen as the Shiny jank that it is (like pretty much every Shiny/Virgin platformer from that era), yet for some reason a decent number of people still argue that MD Aladdin is better. Aladdin has a sword (yes, that was an argument back in the day, and a source of envy for me) ![]() more faithful to the source material (artstyle, animations, music) Reasons to like the Mega Drive version better: ![]()

![]() ![]() Eggman is so good that it was remade (altough poorly) twice in Sonic Lost World and Sonic Forces.
![]() ![]() Rico comes with a few upgrades himself since we last saw our old friend in action. Players now have the ability to spawn any vehicle, weapon, or special item they’ve previously unlocked - no more driving miles across the map to climb into the cockpit of a fighter jet to only be blown to pieces by an enemy. Yes, you certainly read that correctly - Avalanche Studios learned a thing or two from the modding community with the induction of a "rebel drop" system. Rather, the excitement comes from liberating the various provinces of enemy forces and spawning your own military helicopters to blow out the base of a towering quarter-mile long bridge. The game looks and plays a lot like a more refined and righteous version of Grand Theft Auto V - you’re not going to find people shooting each other in a drive-by during broad daylight, nor will you find yourself looking to do the same. Just about every vehicle imaginable is available for the taking, as well. The arsenal of weapons and gadgets at Rico’s disposal is rather impressive, too, and seems to grow in size as the game progresses. Rico’s character movements are surprisingly intuitive, which makes causing chaos to the destructible environments and navigating the series of islands a breeze. The landscapes are much more detailed than I had initially thought and the sheer size of the sprawling world is impressive - the nearly 400 square miles of map took me roughly 17 minutes to fly across. After a pretty awesome introductory mission of tightroping across the top of a small aircraft while laying waste with a rocket launcher, I was able to absorb everything Just Cause 3 has to offer. My initial reaction to the game was a mixture of excitement and pure intrigue. Rico lets you kick ass and take names without the fear of dying like a little girly man from a showdown with the militia. Rather, you’re going to get everything gamers love about an open-world action adventure - loud weapons, fast cars, things that fly, explosions, a massive landscape, and the ability to feel invincible. You’re not going to get an epic set of stunning visuals or a revolutionary combat system, nor will you have a title that screams blockbuster hit. Rico, our fearless central character, feels a lot like Rambo with his endless supply of weapons and the apparent ability to absorb bullets like they're vitamin D. The newest edition from Avalanche Studios is your stereotypical "guy" video game with huge weapons, stuff blowing up at every corner, and a protagonist that isn’t scared of anything. Just Cause 3 reminds us exactly why we picked up a controller in the first place - to be purely entertained. ![]() ![]() ![]() In addition, the multitude of mods and user-created maps should provide you with endless possibilities and enough action to last you a lifetime. In the end, Quake III Arena is as fun today as it was when it first came out, regardless of what happened in the meantime. Hence, much of the technology employed was quite ahead of its time, which means that the engine got reused in a variety of other games for years to come, at least until the studio developed a brand new version of it. ![]() Graphically-speaking, the game featured a revolutionary engine for that time, developed specifically to handle the new looks of the series. Furthermore, you can also pick-up a variety of other things around the map, such as medikits to heal your wounds, additional ammo, or even power-ups to increase your powers for a short amount of time. 3-D Hardware Accelerator with full OpenGL support, Pentium 233 Mhz MMXprocessor with 8 MB Video Card or Pentium II 266 Mhz processor with 4 MB Video Card, or AMD 350 Mhz K6-2 processor with 4 MB Video Card, 64 MB RAM, a 100 Windows XP/Vista compatible computer system (including compatible 32-bit drivers for video card, sound card and input devices), 25 MB of uncompressed hard disk. To maintain the Quake feeling, the available weapons are mostly variations of the ones that were already present in the franchise, although there are some new additions as well. As such, beside the usual deathmatch mode, you can also take part in free for all, capture the flag and tournament matches, all of which have different objectives in the end. Thus, by introducing a few new gimmicks and reusing some old elements from the previous titles, this third installment managed to become one of the most successful multiplayer FPS games ever released.Īlthough it brought on a lot of revolutionary ideas and changes, the main idea behind the game was basically the same as it was in the first two episodes, only very much improved and heavily focused on multiplayer modes and maps. The official Quake3: Arena demo is here This demo contains four maps, which are q3dm1, q3dm7, q3dm17, and q3tourney2. Quake III Arena is definitely one of these games, especially since it went against the normal course of the franchise and dropped the singleplayer component entirely, in order to focus on providing the players with the most intense multiplayer matches ever seen. Thus, titles like Half-Life and Unreal Tournament truly set the pace at the time of their release, but there were many more that did the same at some point. Multiplayer shooters always had a tendency to influence the entire industry, especially since they require constant innovation in order to attract the players and rise above all the other titles in the same category. ![]() ![]() Thanks to Tomo Pauk for the latest PG3D/PGIII update for 2007 as well as for new screenshots! Despite this wide focus, the game flows well from era to era, and each phase of the game feels meaty. Unlike many RTS games, the focus in Rise of Nations is on all of human history, from people throwing rocks at one another all the way up to modern stealth bombers and cruise missiles. The game is packed with interesting choices and trade-offs, and seems well balanced towards longer games rather than favoring a highly-optimized rush strategy. You can only get so much value out of a single city, but building more requires you to increase your civic research level. Units in enemy territory can take attrition damage, which keeps an enemy army from easily hiding in your territory or wandering past your border cities to strike directly at your capital. Rise of Nations takes these real-time and turn-based strategy elements and blends them together in interesting ways. He was also creative director for one of the Age of Empires 3 expansion packs. This pedigree isn’t all that surprising, considering this game is from Big Huge Games, and founder Brian Reynolds was a veteran of Microprose and a founding member of Firaxis, where he helped design some of the most beloved entries in the Civilization series. There are government styles to choose from, and each has its unique benefits. There’s also a concept of territory, with each nation having borders that expand as certain buildings and techs are introduced. Caravans create trade routes between friendly cities, boosting your gold income. A city may only have 5 farms, for example, but you can build a granary that boosts food production. Like Civilization, your territory is divided into a number of cities, and each city has certain attributes and limitations. These armies then clash for control of territory and resources. When you’ve accumulated enough of these resources, you can purchase tech upgrades and form armies. You start out building peon-type citizen units, who build structures and harvest resources. Like Age of Empires, Rise of Nations is a real-time strategy game that focuses on resource gathering and army-to-army combat. ![]() If you’ve never played Rise of Nations before, it’s functionally very similar to Age of Empires, but crossed with Civilization. I’ve apparently dedicated some small chunk of my brain to remembering the music in this game, and it’s still really good. Oh, man, the soundtrack! The first time I loaded Rise of Nations up after having not played it in over a decade, and the music gave me chills. There’s not much change to the gameplay, which is good, seeing as gameplay-wise Rise of Nations was ahead of its time. It also runs at modern resolutions, although the graphics are still 10 years old at this point. For instance, there’s built-in Twitch streaming.
